Before the storm
- Clear gutters and drains; test your sump pump and backup power.
- Move valuables and papers off lower floors.

During
- Follow evacuation orders.
- Stay off flooded roads: a foot of moving water can float a car.
After
- Wait for officials to say it's safe to return.
- Photograph everything before cleanup.
